How to Start Activated Carbon From Coconut Shell Business

Activated Carbon from the coconut shell project can be initiated according to the availability of raw materials. It is available in nature in various forms like pellets, granules, and powder forms. Activated carbon in any form of carbon shows high absorption capacity for gases, vapors, and colloidal solids in either the gas ion or liquid phase.

It is a very important chemical element having widespread application applied by numerous industries. For example, activated carbon is required in the absorption of certain gases and vapors in the purification process, in various catalytic chemical reactions, depolarization of vegetable oil, and sugar solutions.

In the case of purification of liquids, the powdered form of activated carbon is added to the liquid to be purified and the mixture is agitated and finally filtered.

Granulated activated carbons are used primarily for the purification of gases or liquids. Furthermore, it is used in a vertical carbon-packed column. Decolorizing carbon is used in an appreciable amount in oil refining, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.

With the expansion of the pharmaceutical and agro-based oil industry, the demand for activated carbon is expected to rise steadily in the coming years. Apart from demand in the Indian market, there is also a massive demand for activated carbon in the foreign market for high-quality activated carbon.

Activated Carbon From Coconut Shell Manufacturing Process

The process of activation is carried out in two stages. Firstly the coconut shell is converted into shell charcoal by carbonization process which is usually carried out in mud pits, brick kilns, and metallic portable kilns.

The coconut shell charcoal is activated by reaction with steam at a temperature of 900°C -1100°C under a controlled atmosphere in a rotary kiln.

The reaction between steam and charcoal takes place at the internal surface area, creating more sites for adsorption. The temperature factor, in the process of activation, is very important.

Below 900°C, the reaction becomes too slow and is very uneconomical. Above 1100°C the reaction becomes diffusion-controlled and therefore takes place on the outer surface of the charcoal resulting in loss of charcoal.
